Pterygium is one of the common changes on the conjunctiva as a person ages. It is a conjunctival growth that appears to be triangular in shape with the apex towards the cornea. It affects both male and female adults. It normally appears on the eye of people who work in dusty environment, who walk under the sun most often, market women, welders, those who engage so much with smoke and so on.
The person with pterygium may have eye pains, prickly sensation, burning sensation, foreign body sensation, tearing, red eyes and it becomes very inflamed when he or she walks in the sun.
Pterygium can grow to cover the surface of your cornea thereby reducing vision. Mind you, no ocular drugs can remove pterygium but the symptoms can be managed. Pterygium can be removed by Surgery (excision).
Visit your Eye Care Practitioner if you have unusual growth on the conjunctiva (pterygium)
